  My first visit with Dr. Azzam was short and sweet. He looked at the MRI of my lower back and immediately concluded that I needed surgery to remove a large synovial cyst and relieve the symptoms associated with spinal stenosis. In fact, I had been suffering quite severely from sciatic pain radiating down both legs. He showed me the film and told me that he would need to fuse L4 and L5 vertebrae after cleaning out the cyst and bringing the two vertebrae back into alignment. He asked if I wanted to proceed with the surgery and I indicated that yes I wanted to have it done. In all, the appointment lasted no more than 10 minutes. Dr. Azzam is a man of few words. Several months went by between that appointment and my next appointment which was to confirm all the details of the surgery including the hospital he preferred to use (Inova Fairfax). Dr. Azzam answered all my questions in a kind and caring way but he did not try to pressure me or "sell" me in any way. As a matter of fact he was so cool describing the procedure that I felt very much at ease in selecting him as my surgeon. It was a very good decision on my part. Dr. Azzam performed the surgery as he said he would in about exactly the amount of time he said it would take. The proceedure started around 8:30 in the morning and I was in my private room at Inova Fairfax by about noon. Later that afternoon he came by to tell me how it went and asked me if I wanted to go home the next day. He had me up and walking with a walker that evening. A fever prevented me from going home immediately but my pain levels were very low and manageable with minimal medication. Once home I was able to get by with one or two tylenol per day and only for a couple of days. Even though I was a bit weak from the surgery I could pretty much function normally after one week or 10 days. For months afterward I was restricted from bending, lifting and twisting (BLTs) and I did my best to honor the doctor's request. I cannot recommend Dr. Azzam highly enough. He performed beautifully and did exactly what he said he was going to do. I asked the nurses and therapists at Inova about him and to a person they confirmed that he is fantastic in every way. They love him. As one anesthesiologist told me, he is "very good technically" - which is what I wanted - and he proved it. It has been seven months since the surgery and I am back on the golf course. Thanks to Dr. Azzam I am totally pain free. No more sciatic pain!!!! Yea.
