  Before visiting Dr. Lotfi’s office in July 2017, I experienced severe sciatic-related pain that ran from my right buttock through my right leg, hamstring, thigh, knee and calf areas and ended in my foot, in particular my ankle area. Of course, I was looking for an easy way out and asked Dr. Lotfi if I could be treated with Steroids (Cortisone injections). Dr. Lotfi, immediately said that he would not proceed with any regimen until we had an MRI, since the initial X-rays reflected a curvature to my spine. After Dr. Lotfi’s examination and review of the MRI, I was diagnosed with Lumbar foraminal and central stenosis and Degenerative Scoliosis to the L3-4 and L4-5 discs. Dr. Lotfi then informed me that I would have to undergo a Lumbar laminectomy, posterior fusion and a Transforaminal Lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF). He followed by thoroughly explaining the procedure using visual aids in form of a video and plastic models. I must admit that I had my doubts about the procedure and potential outcome with the theory of always hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. Dr. Lotfi assured me that this type of surgery had greatly advanced in the past few years. He displayed such confidence and professionalism that quickly laid my worries to rest. On the day of the operation, the staff at the Sentara Surgical Center was very welcoming, efficient professional and friendly; the nurses, physicians and specialists all came by introduced themselves and explained their part in my procedure. The next thing that I remember, was waking up in the recovery room and speaking with my wife. The operation went a bit more than the expected 5 to 6 hours and had gone well. After the surgery, the only pain I’ve experienced has been around the incision area and it has been minimal compared with the pain I experienced earlier. The staples were removed during the post-op checkup about 10 days later. The pain in the small of the back, around the incision has continued into the fourth week after the surgery but the sciatic nerve pain in my right leg is gone. Now, going into my fourth week of physical therapy, the pain across my buttocks and the small of my back is sometimes there, but this I would expect just a few weeks after the surgery. In a nutshell, the complete procedure was a lot easier than I had first feared and I would not hesitate to whole-heartedly recommend Dr. Lotfi to anyone experiencing any orthopedic problem and especially if related to the spine.
